Qiuyuan Overview

In Wuthering Waves, Qiuyuan is a 5-Stars Aero character and uses Sword during the fight.

Qiuyuan Mechanism

Unique Mechanic

Now, let’s look at Qiuyuan‘s gameplay. His Basic Attacks and Heavy Attacks have a very unique mechanic: for a short period after performing a Basic or Heavy Attack, if he gets hit, he will automatically nullify the damage and trigger a Dodge Counter.

However, this mechanic has many limitations. First, it does not activate immediately upon using the Basic or Heavy Attack, but rather about one second after the attack animation begins. This means if you are hit immediately after pressing the attack button, the auto Dodge Counter will not trigger. Secondly, any other command will cancel this state. Therefore, as long as you are continuously attacking, this auto Dodge Counter effectively doesn’t exist.

Qiuyuan’s Basic Attack

First, Qiuyuan‘s normal Basic Attack has three segments. When the third segment hits an enemy, you can see his Circuit Energy refills by half a segment. Qiuyuan‘s Forte Circuit has three segments total, representing 600 points, so half a segment is 100 points.

If you continue pressing the attack button after a Heavy Attack, you can chain into the fourth segment of his Enhanced Basic Attack.

This fourth Enhanced Basic Attack segment isn’t particularly special either, aside from restoring 100 points (half a segment) of Circuit Energy.

Therefore, the overall benefit of Qiuyuan‘s Basic and Heavy Attacks is very low, and they are basically not used.

Qiuyuan’s Resonance Skill

Next, let’s look at his Resonance Skill. Qiuyuan‘s Resonance Skill has two versions: tap and hold. The tap version features a GP (Guard Point) mechanic. This means if Qiuyuan uses the Resonance Skill just as he is about to be hit, he will nullify the damage and freeze/stall surrounding enemies. However, if you switch characters, this stalling effect will disappear.

The hold version has two scenarios. If there are enemies nearby, Qiuyuan will dash forward and deal damage. It’s important to note that the hold version does not have the GP mechanic. However, the damage from the hold version can be animation canceled, whereas the tap version cannot.

If there are no enemies nearby, Qiuyuan will leap into the air and run forward. This hold version can also be used while already in the air.

Qiuyuan’s Forte Circuit

When Qiuyuan‘s Circuit Energy is filled by one segment (200 points), pressing the attack button will make him perform an Enhanced Basic Attack. It’s important to note that this Enhanced Basic Attack, unlike his normal Basic Attack, cannot trigger the auto Dodge Counter.

This Enhanced Basic Attack has four segments. Each segment restores 100 points (half a segment) of Circuit Energy. Executing all four segments will completely refill the Circuit Energy. However, we generally don’t use this method because if you rely on Basic Attacks to build the initial segment, it’s far too slow.

Instead, we have Qiuyuan enter the field via his Intro Skill. Qiuyuan‘s Intro Skill directly grants him 400 points (2 segments) of Circuit Energy. At this moment, Qiuyuan‘s Basic Attack has already changed to the Enhanced Basic Attack. Furthermore, if you press the attack button after the Intro Skill, he will chain into the third and fourth segments of the Enhanced Basic Attack. This gives 400 + 100 + 100 points, perfectly filling the Circuit Energy.

During this process, Qiuyuan provides a buff to the team called Bamboo’s Shade, which increases the active character’s Echo Skill DMG Bonus by 30%. With a 30-second duration, this is practically permanent. However, note that only the active on-field character receives this benefit. Therefore, when Phlorova uses her Resonance Liberation and controls Hecate from the off-field, she does not receive this bonus.

Once Qiuyuan‘s Circuit Energy is completely full, he immediately enters the Inksplash of Mind state (let’s call it the “Ink State” for short). This state lasts only 8 seconds. During this time, Qiuyuan‘s Heavy Attack becomes an Enhanced Heavy Attack. This Enhanced Heavy Attack also cannot trigger the auto Dodge Counter.

The Enhanced Heavy Attack has three segments; we simply hold down the attack button, and he will chain them automatically. Each segment consumes one segment of Circuit Energy. Once the energy is depleted, he immediately exits the Ink State.

The most important aspect of these three Enhanced Heavy Attack segments is that they are each considered different Echo Skills. This means they can provide Galbrena with 3 * 8 = 24 points of Afterflame, or trigger Hecate‘s Enhanced Attack three times.

Inherent Skill – Quietude Within

When Qiuyuan enters the Ink State, he gains a 10-second buff. During this time, enemies take 50% increased damage from his Enhanced Heavy Attacks (essentially a 50% Vulnerability debuff). Additionally, when the third segment of the Enhanced Heavy Attack hits an enemy, it restores an extra 30 points of Concerto Energy.

However, if you switch characters at any time during this 10-second duration, the buff disappears immediately. This means you lose both the 50% Vulnerability and the entire 30 Concerto Energy.

Also, it’s worth mentioning that Qiuyuan‘s three Enhanced Heavy Attack segments lack interruption compensation (unlike Augusta‘s Spinslash), cannot control enemies (unlike Galbrena‘s rift), and don’t make him untargetable in the air (unlike Iuno). This makes him relatively easy to interrupt. If interrupted, you have to start again from the first segment. If you fail to land the third segment, you miss out on the 30 Concerto Energy, which can be problematic. So, where is his interruption resistance? It’s in his S1.

Another Inherent Skill – Drink Away Woes Age-Old

After Qiuyuan uses an Echo Skill, whenever he gains Circuit Energy, his ATK increases by 10%. This effect does not stack. It’s a very minor boost, but we should use it whenever possible. Therefore, it’s best to use an Echo Skill immediately after Qiuyuan‘s Intro Skill, before chaining into the Enhanced Basic Attacks.

Qiuyuan’s Resonance Liberation

Next, his Resonance Liberation. Besides dealing damage, it provides the entire team with up to 30% Crit DMG. For every 1% of Qiuyuan‘s Crit Rate that exceeds 50%, he provides 2% Crit DMG. Thus, he provides the maximum bonus at 65% Crit Rate, which is very easy to achieve.

Qiuyuan’s Outro Skill

As for Qiuyuan‘s Outro Skill, it provides the next character to take the field with a 50% Echo DMG Deepen effect. Galbrena can fully utilize this buff. While Phlorova also has a significant portion of her damage as Echo damage, it’s primarily dealt by Hecate. Therefore, except for Phlorova‘s own personal Echo Skill damage, she cannot benefit from this Deepen effect.

Additionally, Qiuyuan‘s Outro Skill has its own casting animation. The instant it’s used, it interrupts the current action. Therefore, if you plan to end your rotation with his Resonance Skill, it’s best to use the hold version. As mentioned before, the hold version’s damage can be animation canceled, while the tap version cannot. This allows you to maximize the benefits.

Mid-air Attack
Consume STA to perform Plunging Attack, dealing Aero DMG.

Dodge Counter
Press Normal Attack right after a successful Dodge to attack the target, dealing Aero DMG, considered as Heavy Attack.
Moments after a Basic Attack or Heavy Attack, Qiuyuan reduces the next instance of DMG he takes by 100% and casts Dodge Counter upon being attacked, dealing Aero DMG.

Qiuyuan Resonance Skill
DMG Multiplier

Resonance Skill Lv:

Press Resonance Skill to dash forward for a distance, dealing Aero DMG, considered as Echo Skill DMG. If Resonance Skill is cast upon being attacked by an enemy target, Qiuyuan slows down nearby enemies and takes 100% less DMG while gaining immunity to interruptions during the action.
Switching to other Resonators or finishing the skill removes the slowdown effect from enemies.

Undaunted Wayfarer
Hold Resonance Skill to leap into the air and dash forward for a distance at the cost of STA, dealing Aero DMG to targets.
If there are no targets nearby, Qiuyuan will leap up and dash through the air by continuously consuming STA until it runs out. Release Resonance Skill to immediately end the dash and land. If there are targets nearby when Qiuyuan lands, deal Aero DMG to nearby targets, considered as Echo Skill DMG. This skill can be cast in mid-air.

Qiuyuan Resonance Liberation
DMG Multiplier

Resonance Liberation Lv:

Deal Aero DMG to targets within range, considered as Echo Skill DMG.
For every 1% of Qiuyuan’s Crit. Rate over 50%, this skill increases the Crit. DMG of all nearby active Resonators in the team by 2% for 30s, up to 30%.

Qiuyuan Forte Circuit
DMG Multiplier

Forte Circuit Lv:

Basic Attack – Thus Spoke the Blade: Inkwash
When Qiuyuan has more than 200 points of Swordster’s Soliloquy, his Basic Attack is replaced with Basic Attack Thus Spoke the Blade: Inkwash, which chains together up to 4 consecutive strikes, dealing Aero DMG, considered as Heavy Attack DMG.

Bamboo’s Shade
When Qiuyuan reaches 400 points of Swordster’s Soliloquy, he gains the Bamboo’s Shade effect, allowing all nearby active Resonators in the team to increase their Echo Skill DMG Bonus by 30% for 30s.

Inksplash of Mind
When Swordster’s Soliloquy is full, Qiuyuan enters the Inksplash of Mind state for 8s, during which Heavy Attack is replaced with Heavy Attack Thus Spoke the Blade: To Save.
In this state, hold Normal Attack to consume Swordster’s Soliloquy to perform Heavy Attack Thus Spoke the Blade: To Teach, Thus Spoke the Blade: To Save, and Thus Spoke the Blade: To Sacrifice in order, dealing Aero DMG, considered as Heavy Attack DMG.
– Performing Thus Spoke the Blade: To Teach, Thus Spoke the Blade: To Save, or Thus Spoke the Blade: To Sacrifice is considered as performing Echo Skill.
– Inksplash of Mind ends when Swordster’s Soliloquy is used up.

Swordster’s Soliloquy
Qiuyuan can hold up to 600 points of Swordster’s Soliloquy.
– 100 points of Swordster’s Soliloquy is obtained when performing Basic Attack Stage 3.

S1 provides 20% Crit Rate and Interruption Resistance. Unlike the interruption resistance in Galbrena’s S1, the improvement to gameplay feel from Qiuyuan’s S1 is extremely significant. As for the 20% Crit Rate, it might seem good at first glance, but I must remind you: Qiuyuan’s innate stat ascension bonus provides Crit Rate, and his signature weapon also provides Crit Rate. So, even if you use a Crit DMG main stat on the 4-Cost Echo, the available room for Crit Rate substats is only about 42.7%. After further subtracting Shorekeeper’s buffs, only about 30% remains. This means if your Echo substats are even slightly good, the value of S1 decreases. The better your Echo substats are, the lower the benefit from S1 becomes.

S2 has one key difference from the original effect described in his Forte Circuit: the original effect only applies to the active on-field character, but S2 removes this restriction. This means that an off-field Hecate (of Phrolova) can also benefit from this 30% Damage Deepen.

S3 changes Qiuyuan’s rotation. After finishing the usual three Enhanced Heavy Attacks, if his Concerto Energy is full, Qiuyuan can perform a special skill. Similar to his Intro Skill, this refills two segments of his Circuit Energy. He can then chain into the 3rd and 4th segments of his Enhanced Basic Attack, which refills his Circuit Energy again, allowing him to perform another full set of three Enhanced Heavy Attacks. However, during this second set, the effect of his Inherent Skill “Quietude Within” will not trigger, meaning there is no 50% Vulnerability on enemies. But, each segment of the Enhanced Heavy Attack itself gains an additional 600% multiplier. Overall, this still represents a massive damage increase.

S4 & S5 are the low value Resonance Chains.

S6 provides a very powerful stasis/freeze effect lasting a full 5 seconds. However, this stasis effect only triggers when the third Enhanced Heavy Attack is released. Furthermore, switching characters or the enemy taking damage will clear the stasis effect. What does this mean? It means that whether Qiuyuan’s three Enhanced Heavy Attacks actually hit the enemy, or whether they miss, has little to do with the S6 stasis effect. If they were going to hit, they still will; if they were going to miss, they still might.

This is because the stasis triggers on the third—the final—Enhanced Heavy Attack, and ends as soon as the enemy takes damage.

S6 also has two other effects:

Each time Qiuyuan exits the “Inksplash of Mind” state (Ink State) and he is the active on-field character, he deals an AoE damage instance around him. Because starting from S3, Qiuyuan can enter the Ink State twice per rotation, this AoE damage can also trigger twice.

When using the special skill (unlocked by S3), Qiuyuan’s Crit DMG increases by 100%, but this only lasts for 6 seconds. Therefore, only the second set of Enhanced Heavy Attacks can benefit from this bonus. Also, similarly to other buffs, this bonus disappears immediately if you switch characters.

The Echo setup for Qiuyuan is actually quite versatile. First, regarding Energy Regen, I recommend at least 130%. If you want a very smooth experience, it’s best to aim for an additional 5% to 10%. Therefore, using an Echo with Energy Recharge as its main stat is completely viable.

In a team composition of Galbrena, Qiuyuan, and Shorekeeper, it is recommended to use Impermanence Heron as Qiuyuan’s main Echo. This allows Galbrena to benefit from a 12% Damage Bonus. While the Reminiscence: Fenrico from the Law of Harmony set provides bonuses that are quite suitable for Qiuyuan personally, from an overall team damage perspective, the difference compared to using Impermanence Heron is significant.

Therefore, for this team, you can choose either a full 5-piece Moonlit Cloud set or a 2-piece Moonlit Cloud + 3-piece Law of Harmony set.

If you did not pull for Canterella and want to run a team of Phlorova, Qiuyuan, and Shorekeeper, then a full 5-piece Moonlit Cloud set is no longer ideal for your Qiuyan. In this case, your options are:

Use Impermanence Heron as the main Echo + a 3-piece Law of Harmony set.

Use Reminiscence: Fenrico as the main Echo + any 2-piece set (Aero DMG / Moonlit Cloud).

Another scenario: If you cannot obtain a good Reminiscence: Fenrico, you can use Nightmare Beringal as the main Echo, specifically with a 2-piece Aero DMG set + a 3-piece Law of Harmony set.

Substat Priority

Prioritize meeting your Energy Recharge requirement first. After that, the priority order is: Crit Rate / Crit Damage > ATK% > Flat ATK = Heavy Attack DMG Bonus.

While there is a performance gap between his signature weapon and non-signature options, this primarily affects Qiuyuan’s personal damage. Since Qiuyuan’s contribution to the team’s total damage is relatively low, the actual impact on overall team performance is minimal.

For example, in a team composition of Galbrena, Qiuyuan, and Shorekeeper, the difference in total team damage between using Qiuyuan’s signature weapon and using the “Thousand-Drifted Rivers” weapon is only about 5%.

Therefore, if your resources are limited, you can completely skip pulling for Qiuyuan’s signature weapon.

Calcharo

Calcharo primarily uses the enhanced Basic Attack and enhanced Forte Circuit after using Resonance Liberation for damage output. In the series of damage output after using Resonance Liberation, the damage ratio between Resonance Liberation and Basic Attack is approximately 2.2:1. Additionally, the Resonance Skill can be released at intervals, allowing full enjoyment of the permanent five-star weapon’s effects.

After using Resonance Liberation, Calcharo gains a new Basic Attack model. The multiplier for this attack is related to the level of Resonance Liberation, but the main proportion of his damage comes from the “Death Messenger” in Forte Circuit. Resonance Skill can be used during the Liberation period to interrupt Basic Attack combos, quickly generate Forte Circuit Energy, and trigger “Death Messenger”. The main components of his damage output consist of these three elements.

Encore

mong the permanent 5-star Fusion DPS characters, Encore enters an enhanced state and changes attack mode after activating Resonance Liberation. The main source of Encore’s damage comes from Basic Attacks after activating Resonance Liberation, not the Forte Circuit. Additionally, the cooldowns for Encore’s regular Resonance Skill and the enhanced Resonance Skill during Resonance Liberation are independent of each other.

In Encore’s damage output after activating Resonance Liberation, Basic Attack damage accounts for nearly 70%. Choosing Sanhua as a teammate can maximize her damage potential.

Sanhua

Although Sanhua has burst capabilities, the overall damage is not high. In Sanhua’s output cycle, Resonance Skill damage and Resonance Liberation account for approximately 51% and 41%, respectively.

Although Resonance Skill damage is slightly higher, there is a risk of missing in actual combat. Sanhua has a unique Forte Circuit trigger mechanism similar to rhythm games, and hitting enemies can cause a slight time-stopping effect.

Sanhua has the fastest Concerto Energy and Resonance Energy acquisition efficiency in the game, making it the most versatile and best-feeling support in the current version. After using the Intro Skill, Sanhua only needs 3 seconds to fully charge Concerto Energy and trigger QTE, activating the Main DPS for output. Our team composition recommendations for various characters also show Sanhua’s high versatility.
